Cholecystectomy is the medical term for the removal of the gallbladder. This procedure is commonly performed laparoscopically and is associated with the advantages of:

  • smaller scars

  • reduced postoperative pain

  • shorter recovery period

Gallbladder Stones

Four small incisions are usually made for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Through these incisions, a tiny video camera and special surgical tools are inserted to enable doctors to see inside the abdomen and remove the gallbladder.

However, open surgery may be warranted in certain cases, such as abnormalities in the abdomen, multiple scarring from previous abdominal surgeries, severe bile duct or gallbladder infection/inflammation, peritonitis, portal hypertension due to liver cirrhosis, and major bleeding disorder or the use of anticoagulants. Our experienced team informs the patient of the details of the surgery and provides follow-up care for a speedy recovery.
