A Heller myotomy is a minimally-invasive procedure utilized to treat achalasia, a disorder in which the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to open properly and does not allow food or liquid to pass to the stomach. The procedure involves making 2-3 inch long incisions and may require general anesthesia. Although there is no cure, achalasia can be managed with the right surgical treatment and medical therapy.
